Celebrations for legalized sports betting in Colorado, which finally passed in April, were muted due to the cancellation of almost all sporting events. Yet sports betting enthusiasts were optimistic that, once sports returns to Colorado, fans will be able to enjoy a more participatory role by being able to wager on their favorite teams and players.

The legalization of sports betting in Colorado doesn’t mean that it will get moving immediately.  The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in the cancellation of almost all sporting events, though sports bettors can still bet on a few limited events. But major league games are on hold and even practice for the fall NFL and NHL seasons is postponed indefinitely.

But sports betting aficionados in Colorado are still celebrating. The long, hard fight to bring sports betting to the state has resulted in victory. Despite the uncertainty of when and how, everyone knows that sports will, at some point, start up again. When the games re-start, the state’s sports bettors will be able to place wagers.

Details

The Division of Gaming has received license applications to open sportsbooks from both retail and internet operators. Those applications have been approved by the Colorado Limited Gaming Control Commission. Technically, sports betting opened on May 1st 2020 in Colorado when four online operators started to take bets via their Internet platforms.

Colorado joins six other states that are offering online sports betting options. Any internet operator who runs an online sportsbook in Colorado must partner with an already-licensed casino that is currently operating in Colorado. There are 33 Colorado casinos that have master licenses which allows them to become the land-based partner of an online sportbook platform.

Online operators who can currently offer sports betting in Colorado include FanDuel, Rush Street Interactive, Roar Digital, and DraftKings.  Rush Street Interactive is partnered with J.P. McGill’s Hotel and Casino, Roar Digital is partnered with Midnight Rose Hotel and Casino, FanDuel is partnered with Golden Gates Casino and Draft Kings is partnered with the Golden Mardi Gras Casino.  There are two additional platforms that are licensed and will launch when they have ironed out technological issues.

Betting Online

Many sports bettors are not familiar with online betting but it’s becoming more and more accepted. In states such as Pennsylvania and New Jersey, even before COVID-19 shut down sporting events, the majority of online sports was conducted online.

Sports bettors can find numerous online gaming platforms where they can place their bets. Some of these platforms are run by sports-specific companies (i.e. FanDuel and Draft Kings) while others are operated by online casinos that also have a games lobby with poker, blackjack, craps, roulette, lotteries, slots and other types of games. eSports is now also featured at many online sportsbooks.

If you’re considering wagering on an online platform, check out the site before you place your first bet. Online sites have an advantage over land-based sites in that they offer the same kinds of bonuses and cashback deals to sports bettors as they do to gamers who play online casino games. However, it’s important to be sure that the site is properly licensed and regulated.

You should look at the footer on the site’s Internet site to check that it has a logo of an accredited international monitoring agency. If it does, you can be assured that the site is supervised, that its online banking is done through recognized and accredited Internet ebanking sites and that your personal information will be kept private.

When choosing a site for sports betting, you will want to make sure that you have the opportunity to place he kind of parlay, straight, prop or other type of bet that you want. You should also check the sporting events that the site covers to make sure that you can bet on your preferred sport.

Getting Started

All major league sporting events are cancelled but if you’re in Colorado and want to get in on the initial sports betting action, here are a few sports on which you can wager online.

Table Tennis

Sportsbooks are taking bets on European table tennis including the upcoming SEKTA Cup, Czech TT Star Series, TT Cup and Moscow Liga Pro.

Horse Racing

Many of the big racing events have been postponed – the Kentucky Derby is now scheduled to take place in September. However, Oaklawn Park in Arkansas and Gulfstream Park and Tampa Bay Downs in Florida are still running races as well as smaller tracks like Will Rodgers Downs and Fonner Park which run on Mondays and Tuesdays.  The events are broadcast nation-wide and bets will be taken by the online sportsbooks.

Handball

The Belarus 1 Handball Division competitions are running as scheduled and feature favored Meshkov Brest who hasn’t lost a league match in months. He’s 23-1 on the season and wagers on him are considered smart bets – regardless of whether or not you understand the rules of handball!

Soccer

Two nations’ Premier Leagues, the Nicaraguan Premier League and the Belarusian Premier League, are playing regularly scheduled games. Sportsbooks in Colorado are taking bets on those games.

E-Sports

E-Sports gambling is a new type of sports wager. No one goes on a sports field in an e-sports competition, no one sweats, no one rolls in the mud. But gamers compete in esports competitions remotely as they vie in video games for tournament prizes. The Nevada Gaming Commission has OK’d esports betting and online sportsbooks are offering odds on multiple esports competitions including the upcoming Counter-Strike Pro League ESL North American matches.
